Slow Network Performance

Hi,
I am experiencing very slow Network performances when printing Reports
over Network. XP reports about 0,02% usage!
App is single user and everything is local, just printing is over Network.
Network is normal Windows Network, PC´s are connected over a 100MBps switch.
There is also a WiFi Network but it is partial Disabled (some PC don't
access it).
Testing Network performance with some other software I can get about 70%
speed.
That seems to be only Pdox Related.
Any Idea?

Alvaro

Are you using WinXP SP2 or do you have a firewall or file scan
software running such as Norton AV?

Always a suspect but should it really affect network printing that much?

Alvaro, how is the network printers installed? Automatically detected by XP
or manually installed with a "local" TCP/IP port, or by UNC?

Printer is installed with the Automatic detection in XP.
Try to install it manually and connect it to a port like

\\SERVERNAME\PRINTERSHARENAME

or directly to a "Local" IP-port.

Anders,
I installed printer with: \\192.168...\Epson.
Seems that it is a little better but still very slow.
I have been watching that it gets so bad when "printer panel" should
appear, it takes too much time to pop up.
Also, it changes speed with time (I think), print some reports more or
less OK, then it goes very slow, then after a while it is quicker and
then again slower. I am in test phase so I am printing very often same
report.

If I recall correctly, you have a mixed XP/ME system.

Do you also have any Windows 98 computers on that network?

Do you have a dedicated 'server' on the system, or is this a peer-to-peer
system?

Tony,
Yes, there is a w98 there, but is at time switched off.
No, there is no dedicated server here.

What happens if yo print with code, without showing the report or the print
dialog?

Hi,

We have seen similar problems if the NIC is set to automatic concerning
10/100Mbs. Some cards malfunction and start up at default 10Mbs giving slow
performance until setting 100Mbs. Make sure that that the card has energy
savers off (On is default on XP, Off at MS server apps). This only concerns
if you store data on another pc than the one you execute the report.

NetW-speed also very slow, but it goes quicker bcause there is less to do.
Openning Print Dialog, if I click in PDox frame it popus "not
responding" but waiting some sec. it continues.
By printing first report it is very slow, then prints 3 report at normal
speed then the next one is slow again.
I have beeing testing app with PRuntime 10 in Other installation without
SP2, almost clean Installation (Other partition, same Hardware config.,
Firewall, virus scan activated on Both PC's) and it works normal.
So it seems to be something related to SP2.

The NIC speed was set as 100Mbps, fullduplex. Change it to Auto but no
difference.

Hi,

It seems that is a SP2 related problem, because also other app
-"StarOffice"- performs very slow when printing.

Should I give a try before I uninstall it , re-install WordPerfect 2002
Pro, or will that be waste of time ?
I am under time pressure and I would like to lose as less time as possible.

I have applied SP2 to Xp on a couple of machines and haven't noticed any
slow printing from Paradox or any other application.

Before you go to the trouble of re-installing Paradox, maybe reinstalling
the printer drivers or try with another printer driver might be an easier
fix?

BTW - have you tested to print to a local printer?

Anders,
Printing to a local printer is OK.
There is no XP drivers for the Net printer, only there are some for , I
believe, w2k and I would like not use them.
Printer driver are of a recent Installation.
I have in code call to print a report 5 times the same report with data
from table. First one goes very slow , then 3 prints very quick, then
the next one goes very slow again.

? But which driver are you using then?

What you could try is to install an "old" driver. If the printer is a PCL
printer, try to install it as HP Laserjet III. If it's a postscript printer
try to install it at as Apple Laserwriter II.

H:ere the code:

R_info["restartoptions"]=printlock
R_Info["name"]="Clientes"
for k from 1 to nr_cr
rep.print(r_info)

I have never used the "restartoptions". Is the report based on network data
or data in PRIV?

Why do you loop instead of using nCopies?

What happens if you don't open the report on screen and do something like
this instead?

R_Info["name"]="Clientes"
R_info["ncopies"]=smallint(nr_cr)
rep.print(R_info)

Anders,
Thank you for your help.
That code was working before and is working with RTime and XPSP1 just fine.
I do not think that the code is the problem. Problem is PDox acessing
printer, something is "blocking" the data flow.
More and more , everything shows towards XP_SP2 related problems.
I had also problems with other app, had to re-install them.
Also re-installed WordPerfect2002 but still the problem.
Now I will go the way of de-install SP2.
I will be away for some time and when I come back will do that and post
hier the result of it

Alvaro, I don't recall every detail of this thread but I remember you had
some printing problems. Did you see the posts by Egbert and someone else who
also had problems with slow performance? It later turned out to be
references to non-existing printers in the registry, removing that mad
Paradox back to normal. Maybe worth to check out?

Uninstalling SP2 for XP might be a solution for the time being but in the
long run it's not a good solution. As we are a few who are actually running
P10 on XP SP2 without problems, there must be somethings that can be done.
Not sure about what though...

Yes, that "printlock" restart option seems suspicious to me as well. I just
looked it up in the online help, which tells me the printlock option locks
the tables in the report's data model. Can you try it with "PrintNoLock"?
